Penguins Place Fourth at Season-Opening Roseann Schwartz Invitational

HERMITAGE, Pa. – The Youngstown State women's golf team opened its 2026-27 season on Monday with a fourth-place finish in the Roseann Schwartz Invitational Presented by Chick-fil-A Tiffany Square Plaza at Avalon at Buhl Park in Hermitage, Pa.
The Penguins concluded the one-day, 36-hole tournament with a two-round total of 597 to place fourth as a team. YSU recorded a 298 in the opening round before closing the event with a second-round 299.
Ohio State claimed the tournament title at 12 over par with a two-round team total of 572 after rounds of 283 and 289, respectively. Akron finished as the runner-up with a 588, Bowling Green placed third with a 589 and IU Indy finished 18 strokes behind Youngstown State to round out the top five.
YSU had a pair of players finish in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard. In her first collegiate tournament, Inés González Ortega finished tied for ninth with a two-round score of 149 (77-72). The freshman's two-over-par 72 in the second session featured 10 pars and three birdies as she carded a one-over-par 36 on the back nine.
Valentina Peña Anaya also finished tied for ninth individually with a two-round total of 149 (71-78). The junior's opening-round 71 included nine pars and four birdies as she fired a two-under-par 33 on the back nine.
Neeranuch Prajunpanich finished tied for 13th with a two-round 150 (73-77). The senior's first-round 73 featured 10 pars and three birdies. Sofia Perez Escarcena also finished tied for 13th with a two-round score of 150 (77-73). The junior's second-round 73 included 12 pars and a birdie on the par-four No. 5.
Playing as individuals, Bella Saur finished with a two-round total of 155 (77-78) while Matilyn Zines turned in a two-round 156 (79-77).
Freshman Eliza Mercer recorded a two-round score of 158 (81-77) in her collegiate debut while sophomore Hailey Boss posted a two-round total of 163 (83-80) in her first collegiate event playing as an individual.
Ohio State's Matilde Santilli earned medalist honors at two under par overall with a two-round score of 138 (65-73) while her teammate Sophie Eppelstun placed second with a two-round 139 (71-68).
Youngstown State will continue the fall portion of its 2026-27 season on Sept. 7-8 with the Penn State Nittany Lion Invitational at the Penn State Blue Course in University Park, Pa.
