At one time, Ray Carter was considered one of the fastest men in the State of Ohio.
He played running back for the Penguins from 1955 to 1958 and also ran track. He was clocked at 9.8 in the 100-yard dash.
He earned eight letters, participating in football and track. He set the school mark in the 100-yard dash at 9.7 and at 23-feet in the broad jump.
As a junior in 1957, Carter was second on the team in rushing with 500 yards and five touchdowns. He also caught five passes for 71 yards.
In 1959, he was named YSU's Most Valuable Athlete and signed to play professional football with the Detroit Lions.
A native of Youngstown, Carter was a nine-time letterwinner at North High School, where he participated in football, basketball track, and was captain of all three teams as a senior.
He was an all-city halfback in 1955, when he also set North High track marks of 9.9 in the 100-yard dash, 22.1 in the 220, and 21-feet in the broad jump. Carter was selected into the Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame on April 1, 1984.
Serving with the United States Army from May 1960 through April 1962, he was chosen outstanding soldier at Fort Knox, Ky., and top physical fitness instructor.
Carter and his wife, Virginia, have three sons, the oldest of whom, Raymond, played football at the University of Notre Dame.
He holds his master's degree in counselor's education from Youngstown State and was working towards his doctoral degree in counselor education at the University of Pittsburgh.
