Goldstone grew up in nearby Campbell, Ohio and lettered in football at Indiana University in 1948. He transferred to Youngstown University in 1950, where he earned two letters and was team captain as a senior. Drafted by Philadelphia in 1952, he played four years with the Eagles and then joined the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL in 1956. A member of the Tiger-Cats for nine years, Goldston closed out his playing career in 1965 with Montreal. The Hamilton media guide once described Goldston by saying, "it is doubtful if there has been a more valuable performer with the Tiger-Cats than Ralph." An All-CFL defensive back, Goldston also played offense as a running back and receiver. He served as defensive coach and recruiter for Montreal from 1966 through 1969, while coaching football and basketball at Burlington Central High in Ontario, Canada at the same time. In 1970, Ralph left Canada to join the New York Giants as a scout. After one year with the Giants, he went to Harvard University where he worked for head coach Joe Restic, who had been one of his coaches at Hamilton. With Harvard, Goldston was a defensive coach tutoring the line-backers and backs. Goldston moved to the University of Colorado in 1973 and coached the offensive backs, which included San Diego's Bo Matthews. The year prior to joining the Seahawks, he was offensive back-field coach for the Chicago Bears.
