One of the most graceful and athletic female athletics in YSU history was gymnast Mary Ann e Sefcik. The four-time letter winner was named the team's Most Valuable Player three times in her career.
A two-time team captain, Sefcik won the Division II AIAW All-Around Regional Championship with 33.2 points in 1980. She also won the balance beam, was second in the floor exercise and finished third in the vault.
At the 1980 National Championships, Sefcik placed in the top third.
In 1981, Sefcik again qualified for nationals, finishing 30th in the vault with a score of 8.5, tied for 73rd in the balance beam with a 7.4, tied for 73rd in the uneven bars with a mark of7.45 and tied for 50th in the floor exercise with an 8.35. Sefcik finished tied for 52nd in the all-around competition with a score of 31.7, which was good enough to finish in the top one-quarter.
As a team at the 1981 regional, the Penguins finished third thanks to a first-place finish in the vault by Sefcik.
In 1982, Sefcik finished third in the regional tournament and placed in the top 15-percent at the AIAW Division II National Championships.
An accounting and computer science major, Sefcik graduated with a bachelor of science degree in business administration. She is the owner of a residential and multi-family construction company.
Sefcik, a graduate of Chaney High School, and her husband, Robert Hallapy, are the parents of three children, Ryan, Jenna and Justin.
