Running back Marschell Brumfield established seven school records for the Penguins and was just the fourth player in school history to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a career.

Brumfield set school marks for points in a game (24), touchdowns in a game (four), points in a season (90), rushing and total touchdowns in a season (15), rushing touchdowns in a career (32), touchdowns in a career (34) and longest run in school history (88 yards) during his career from 1975-78.

For his career he had 2,069 yards on 434 attempts and scored 32 touchdowns. Of his 32 rushing scores, 29 came in his final two campaigns. He caught 13 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns in his career. 

As a senior, Brumfield opened the campaign with a spectacular performance against UNI. He showed his big-play capability hauling in a 75-yard touchdown pass from Keith Snoddy in the third quarter and scoring on an 88-yard run in the fourth quarter. In the contest against the Panthers, he had a career-high 177 yards on 17 carries. He also had touchdowns from seven and one yard against UNI in the 30-14 victory.

He rushed for 866 yards on 163 carries and had 14 touchdowns, one shy of his career-best. He was an Honorable-Mention All-America pick by The Associated Press while leading NCAA Division II in scoring. For the year, the Guins advanced to the Division II Playoffs for just the second time in school history. YSU went 10-2 and posted a 5-0 mark in the Mid-Continent Conference to claim the league title. It was the first 10-win season in school history.

During the year he eclipsed the 100-yard mark three other times after his performance at UNI.  He ran for 135 yards on 13 carries against Ashland, had 144 yards and two touchdowns on a career-high 28 attempts against Saginaw Valley State and finished with 116 yards on 25 attempts at Eastern Illinois in the playoffs. In the regular season he had a three-touchdown performance against EIU as the Guins won 40-24. He had nine touchdowns in 12 games.

His junior year was a breakout campaign in which he scored 15 rushing touchdowns to set a school mark for season scores. He had 119 attempts for 493 yards on the campaign.

In just 10 games he had at least one score in seven contests. He had three rushing scores against Eastern Illinois and Western Illinois. He scored twice on three occasions finding paydirt against Tennessee Tech, Dayton and Central State. He had a season-high 20 carries against Dayton and rushed for a season best 107 yards against Tennessee Tech.

In 1976, he led the Penguins in rushing with 641 yards on 138 carries and scored three touchdowns. Twice during the season he rushed for more than 100 yards in a game. He posted a season-high 126 yards on 26 carries against Saginaw Valley. He also had a 122-yard effort on 17 rushes against Dayton.

As a freshman in 1975 he saw limited action with 69 yards on 14 attempts. He had a high of eight carries for 42 yards against Eastern Michigan.

Originally from Duquesne, Pa., he earned all-state and all-league honors as a running back at Forward High School.

He earned his degree from YSU in Criminal Justice and now works as a probation officer.

Brumfield resides in Sacramento, Calif., with his wife, Valerie. The two have a son, Marschell II.
