One of the most aggressive offensive backs at YSU, this Youngstown native (he was a graduate of Rayen) established a school rushing record when he compiled 2,567 yards from 1959-62. He's no longer the leader in that category, but he is still third on the all time list. However, it was Frank Horvath who established the rushing standard by which future Penguin backs would be judged. He had two, 1,000yard rushing seasons, but injuries his senior campaign prevented a third, yet he rushed for 525 yards and still managed a 38.0 yard punting average. His 24 points in a single game (set against Gustavus-Adolphus on November 9, 1961) set the school record for the most points in a game (he's currently in second place on the all time list in that category), while his 184 points during a career is still fourth on the all time career scoring list. He scored 30 touchdowns (ranks third) during his four year stay, while his 12 touchdowns in a single season is still fifth best for a single season. He finished a brilliant Penguin grid career by rushing for 2,567 yards on 412 carries, an average score of 6.2 per tote. He also caught 26 passes and scored 176 total points. When his gridiron career for the Penguins was over, he was tabbed by the Minnesota Vikings in the 19th round of the annual player draft. The Buffalo Bills of the rival American Football League showed an interest as did three Canadian Football League teams also Hamilton, Toronto and the defending 1962 Grey Cup champions, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. It was Winnipeg that won the battle to sign Horvath and inked him to a contract for the 1963 season. He started 1963 on the Blue Bomber roster, but finished the season with the Harrisburg PA Caps of the Atlantic Coast Professional Football League where he played a new position, flanker back, setting team and league records for pass receiving by hauling in 60 aerials for 1145 yards. He scored 103 points on 17 touchdowns and an extra point, leading the Caps to an 8-3-1 overall mark. Currently in the Production Control and Production Planning Department of General Motors, he has five children: Maureen (28), Leslie (27), Frank Jr (26), Michele (24) and Mary Beth (21). Both Michele and Mary Beth are currently YSU students.
