Dwight "Dike" Beede once said, "Bob Housteau-pound for pound- is the most courageous boy I have ever coached. He is our best defensive man who was used on offense!" that about summed up Bob Housteau. While playing for Beede, from 1947-51, Housteau lettered three years while playing the linebacking position for two seasons and offensive and defensive halfback his final year. While playing, the Penguins compiled a 21-17 record. Before coming to Youngstown College to put on his Penguin football uniform, Housteau graduated from Girard High School in 1947 while earning nine letters in football, basketball and baseball. He was the team football captain in 1945 and 1946 for head coach Phil Copple. Besides earning three letters in football, Housteau also garnered a letter for playing baseball. After graduating, he headed off to the Army for two years, 1952 to 1954. While in the army, he was the team captain of the 43rd division football team. After being released from the army, Housteau began his teaching career as he came back to the area to teach at Youngstown Ursuline High School. While there, he was the assistant football coach under head coach Tom Carney. In 1956, Housteau moved on to Newton Falls High School to team and become the assistant coach there for John Bohanes. After a brief stay at Newton Falls, he went to teach and coach at Warren G. Harding High School. While there, he coached under Gene Slaughter and the late Ben Wilson. Housteau retired from teaching in 1987 and is currently living in Girard, Ohio.
