It has often been said that the Youngstown area is blessed with some of the finest amateur baseball talent in the nation, and when head coach Dom Rosselli added Bill Sattler to the fold, he continued a rich pitching tradition that started when Don Leshnock (a YSU Hall of Famer) got picked by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1978. That rich pitching tradition hit its zenith in 1979 when the Montreal Expos nabbed Sattler from the Penguin sandlots. The pitching tradition that Rosselli developed might have had something to do with Sattler getting scouted, but his exploits on the mound sealed his pick by the Expos. From 1976 to 1979, Sattler led the Penguins to an 83-35 overall mark, posting a 17-10 record with a 1.92 career earned run average. That earned run average for a career still ranks fourth on the all time list. As a junior, he led the nation (division II) in average strikeouts per game, striking out 48 in 33 innings or 13.1 per nine innings of work. He still ranks in the top 10 in 14 pitching categories and still holds the top spot with most complete games in a career (21) and most strikeouts in a season (89). Among the many categories where he is still a prominent figure, he is second in most complete game victories in a season with eight, is second with 224 strikeouts in a career, second in most home games started (17) in a career, ranks fourth in career victories with 17, ranks fifth with 168.7 innings pitched in a career, is sixth with six home victories in a season, and ninth for most games started (8) in a season. He is married to the former Millie Colla, and they have two children: Billy (age 4) and Nina (age 2).
