Noah Frederick joined the Youngstown State swimming and diving staff in July 2024. He has three years as a Division I swimming and diving assistant.
Since joining Brad Smith's coaching staff, Frederick has made a huge contribution in the all-around improvement of the men's and women's programs. YSU has set numerous school and pool records since Frederick's addition to the staff.
In 2025-26, the men's program finished third overall, their highest finish ever, while amassing 494 total points, which is a new program record at the league championships. The women were led by Olivia Sweetman who was named the Swimmer of the Meet. Sweetman became the first Penguins swimmer, male or female, to win three event titles at the same Horizon League meet (500 free, 1,000 free and 1,650 free). Quinn Cynor won took home the title in the men's 500 free title.
In 2024-25, the women's program finished third with a new team record of 483 points scored. The women’s team won three Horizon League titles, including the 800-free relay team of Hailey Clark, Oliwia Kaniak, Sweetman and Miriam Frass winning the first relay conference title in YSU Swimming and Diving history (men or women). Frass won the 1650 free title with a program-record time of 16:40.80, becoming the first YSU female swimmer to win that event at the Horizon League Championships, as well as capturing first place in the 400 IM. Frass was named the Horizon League Championships Women's Swimmer of the Meet, marking the first time in program history that a Penguin has received that award. Notable men's moments included Gavin Webb’s third-place finish in the 1650 free, his fourth-consecutive finish on the podium, as well as freshman Jacob Gramer claiming two individual top-three finishes
Prior to coming to YSU, he was at Toledo assistant women's swimming and diving coach for a year.
Frederick was at Indiana University of Pennsylvania before moving up to the Division I ranks, where he has served as a volunteer swimming & diving coach and Graduate Assistant for Aquatics since August of 2021. Frederick orchestrated swim lesson programs, practices, summer camps and clinics for the Crimson Hawks. Over the last two years, he had worked with athletes who complied 22 All-American performances (seven in 2022, and 15 in 2023). He helped coach Rachel Johnson who was the 2023 NCAA DII runner-up in the women's 100 breaststroke, an Elite 90 Award winner, and CSC Division II Academic All-American Team Member of the Year.
Along with working with the varsity team, Frederick worked as the Assistant Director of Aquatic Operations where he developed the daily process of managing, staffing, and guarding the pool and its upper staff and pool members.
Frederick's resume also includes being the Assistant Swim Coach at the Indiana County YMCA since July 2022 and an Assistant Swim Coach at General McLane High School from November 2020 – March 2021. Frederick began his coaching career at the Sampson YMCA as an Assistant Swim Coach from May 2018 – July 2021.
Frederick, a native of Plum, Pa., graduated from Edinboro (Pa.) University with a Bachelor of Exercise Science in 2021, where he was an all-conference honoree who specialized in breaststroke. He is currently completing his master's degree in Sports Management and will graduate from IUP in July of 2023.
