Cal Lambert, who was part of two NCAA Tournament teams at Jacksonville State, has joined the Youngstown State baseball program’s coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2014-15 season.
Lambert will be responsible for the team’s video efforts, coordinating team travel, practice and game management and assisting with the development and execution of camps and clinics. He will also coach the team's catchers, serve as the first base coach, be in charge of defensive positioning for the outfielders and assist with the pitchers and team offense.
Lambert was a four-year letterwinner as a catcher for the Gamecocks from 2010-14. Jacksonville State won the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament his true freshman year in 2010 as well as his redshirt senior season in 2014. YSU head coach Steve Gillispie was an assistant coach at JSU during Lambert’s first three seasons.
“Cal and I were together for three seasons at Jacksonville State, and I was able to see firsthand how committed he is to college baseball and how passionate he is about the game,” Gillispie said. He played for two conference championship teams and two NCAA Regional teams during his time there, and that experience will help us operate more efficiently and continue to build a first-class program.”
Lambert’s best season at the plate came in 2012 when he batted .271 with 14 doubles, 19 runs scored and 23 RBIs. He played in a career-high 48 games that season while making 37 starts. Lambert made 100 starts combined in his Gamecocks career.
Lambert is originally from St. Petersburg, Florida, and graduated from IMG Academy.
