Senior guard Quin Humphrey capped an impressive Youngstown State basketball career being named a first-team All-Horizon League performer twice. Since joining the Division I ranks more than 25 years ago, no Penguin has accomplished that feat.
Humphrey was one of the most productive players since that time as well. In his four seasons, he scored 1,707 points, grabbed 674 rebounds and had 253 assists. Overall he ranks eighth in scoring in school history and 10th in rebounding. Only one player has scored more points than Humphrey since the Guins joined the Division I ranks while two have grabbed more rebounds.
He also finished his career as the school-record holder in minutes played (3,689) and games played (114), ranks second in starts (104), second in 3-point attempts (451), third in 3-pointers made (175), third in steals (137), third in free-throws made (370), fifth in free-throw attempts (492), eighth in blocked shots (46), eighth in field-goals made (586) and ninth in field-goal attempts (1,305). He tallied 17 career double-doubles, including six as a senior and 10 as a junior. He also had six 30-plus point performances.
As a senior he averaged 18.8 points and 7.1 rebounds per contest. He scored a career-best 584 points while grabbing 221 boards, finishing with 92 assists and 42 steals. While playing a school-record 1,105 minutes, he made 189 field goals, 141 free throws and 65 3-pointers. His 141 free throws were the fourth best in a season in school history while his 65 3-pointers ranked second.
In Horizon League play, he led the league in scoring for the second consecutive year averaging 19.7 points per game in conference contests.
He had three amazing performances during the year. Against UIC on Feb. 3 he scored a career-high 37 points on 13-of-15 shooting, including 8-for-9 from behind the 3-point arc. He finished with 36 points versus Detroit on Feb. 14, making 12 field goals, including eight 3-pointers. On Senior Night against Wright State he had 35 points, scoring 29 during an impressive second-half performance.
As a junior, he averaged 19.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per contest. He led the Horizon League in points and rebounds per game not only during the league season, but for the entire year. He became just the second player in conference history to lead the league in both categories for an entire year. For the year he scored 538 points grabbing a career-best 233 rebounds. He scored in double figures in all but one game for the year and had 30-plus points on three occasions.
As a sophomore, he scored 402 points and grabbed 150 rebounds while starting every game. During his freshman campaign in 2003-04, he scored 183 points, had 70 rebounds and 38 assists.
A native of Ellenwood, Ga., he is the son of Sabrina Mitchell and Mark Humphrey. A Sociology major, he was the 2006-07 recipient of the J.F. “Bud” Henry Family Scholarship.
