Life-long Youngstown residents and supporters of Youngstown
State University, Reid and Judy Schmutz have spent their lives
making an impact within the community they love so much.
The Schmutzes grew up across the street from each other and
attended The Rayen School on Youngstown’s North Side. They
married in 1965 and have three children – Charles, Jr., Andy
(Sheri), and Jill (Eddie) – and two grandchildren, Logan and
Lily Schmutz.
In regards to athletics, they have created the Schmutz Athletic
Facilities Support Fund, an endowment to assist the department in
enhancing the student-athlete experience for all Penguins. Reid has
been a long-time member of the Penguin Club’s Board of
Trustees and spent two years as the organization’s president,
from 1999-2001. Tonight, the Schmutz Family is being honored as
Penguins of the Year for their tireless efforts and
contributions.
Throughout the 1990’s, Judy and Reid traveled with the
football team and cheerleaders to various away and playoff games
across the country. They have traveled to Spokane, Wash.,
Philadelphia, Pa., Chattanooga, Tenn., Missoula, Mont., Huntington,
W. Va., Statesboro, Ga., Louisiana and Texas, to name a few. Each
year there is an annual guy’s trip to an away football game
which includes what Reid calls a “probability
conference,” also known as a trip to a casino.
Reid and Judy have always and continue to share their time with
the community by serving in many capacities on various directing
boards.
The Schmutzes are founding members of the Boardman High School
Swim Team Boosters. They are supporters of YSU’s Mad about
The Arts, WATTS, the Schmutz Family Lobby in Stambaugh Stadium, and
the Schmutz Family Classroom in Williamson Hall. Endowments
established are the Schmutz Family Scholarship Fund and the
previously mentioned Schmutz Athletic Facilities Support Fund.
Judy currently serves on the board of the Mahoning County
Libraries and is a sustaining member of the Junior League of
Youngstown. She previously served on the board of the Boardman
United Methodist Preschool, Boardman High School Swim Team, and the
Boardman PTA, in which she was instrumental in creating the Pride
and Spirit Committee for the Boardman School System. In 1997, after
22 years of service, she received lifetime membership in the Ohio
PTA.
Reid served as the President of the YSU Foundation from 1989
through 2011. During his tenure, he oversaw the growth of the
foundation’s assets from $50 million to more than $180
million and helped implement the University Scholars program. The
University Scholars program is based on the premise that academic
excellence deserves to be recognized on a par with achievement in
the highest areas of human activity, and that this recognition
should take the form of an award of full tuition and room and board
for four years for those able to maintain a high level of
excellence. The program awards 40 scholarships annually to
deserving students.
Prior to becoming president of the Foundation, he worked for 25
years at the Standard Slag Company, leaving in 1989 as Vice
President of Operations.
Reid earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Brown
University in 1964. He received an honorary degree and delivered
the commencement address at YSU’s summer commencement in
August 2010. In April 2012, they were honored to receive
YSU’s Friends of the University Award, which recognizes
outstanding leadership and contributions to YSU and the
community.
He is a trustee and past president of the Association of
Fundraising Executives, Mahoning Valley Historical Society,
Youngstown Rotary Club, and YSU Penguin Club. He also is a trustee
of the Mahoning/Shenango Planning Giving Council, The Rayen School
Foundation, the Easter Seals/YHSC, and the Youngstown Hearing and
Speech Center. He previously served on the boards of Junior
Achievement, Mahoning Valley Sports Charities, Mahoning Valley
Historical Society, St. Elizabeth Development Foundation, and the
Park Vista Retirement Community Philanthropy Committee. He also was
a member of the 1985 inaugural class of Leadership Mahoning
Valley.
Recently, Reid has been elected a director of the Farmers Trust
Company. Farmers National Banc Corp. is a holding company comprised
of three subsidiaries: Farmers National Bank of Canfield, an
independent community bank with 20 offices; Farmers Trust Co., a
non-depository bank; and Farmers National Insurance LLC.
In their spare time they enjoy traveling anywhere warm, golfing,
and spending time with family and friends. Although Reid no longer
works at the Foundation, he can still be found around campus
visiting colleagues and taking an interest in all things YSU. He
loves heckling basketball coaches from their seats behind the
visiting team, and walking from loge to loge visiting friends and
sampling desserts during home football games.
