Youngstown, Ohio – The Youngstown State softball team used a five-run third inning, led by as many as seven runs and held on for a 9-7 victory in a game one of a doubleheader split against league foe Green Bay on Friday afternoon. The Penguins lost the nightcap, 11-3.
Youngstown State improves to 25-15 overall and 8-3 in Horizon League play while Green Bay improves to 12-25 overall and 6-8 in league action.
Junior Selah Moyer went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in to lead the Penguins while seniors Kennedy Dean and Bree Kohler each went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Junior Tai Turner was 2-for-4 and scored three runs.
The Penguins fell behind early as the Phoenix scored twice in the top of the first inning. Junior Lydia Wilkerson cut the lead in half with her fourth home run of the year, a solo shot, in the bottom half of the frame. Turner reached on a fielder's choice and Dean's triple down the right-field line plated Turner with the game-tying run.
Moyer's bases-loaded single through the left side scored Turner and Kohler and sophomore Bella Meyer each ripped two-run singles to extend the Penguins lead to 7-2 after three innings.
Back-to-back doubles by Turner and Dean pushed the lead to 8-2 and Moyer's single to left-center brought home Dean to give the Penguins a seven-run advantage.
Green Bay plated three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to get within two.
In the nightcap, Green Bay scored at least two runs in every inning and led the Penguins 11-0 going into the bottom of the fifth. Meyer walked and advanced to third on Wilkerson's double down the left-field line. Emma Gilkerson's single to right field scored Meyer, but Wilkerson got caught in between third and home and was thrown out attempting to get back to third base.
Turner, who went 4-for-7 on the day, blasted a two-run home run to left field to end the game's scoring.
Youngstown State and Green Bay close out the series with a single game, Saturday, April 18, at 9:30 a.m. at the Covelli Sports Complex. Â
