Cincinnati, Ohio – The Youngstown State women's lacrosse team dropped a Sunday afternoon contest, 22-3, to the Cincinnati Bearcats at Nippert Stadium.
Claire Baenziger continued her stellar sophomore campaign, netting all three of YSU's goals. This marked her fourth-straight multi-goal output, and brought her season total to 21 goals. Today's performance also became her fourth performance this season with at-least three goals.
Baenziger and Mackenzie Flannigan tied for a team-high with five draw controls.
Flannigan had a quality performance herself, causing a team-high two turnovers while also corralling a team-high two ground balls.
Alyssa Edwards and Brooke Harper each participated in the cage during today's contest, with Edwards getting the start and playing the first three quarters, while Harper appeared in relief for the final period.
After UC opened the scoring just 15 seconds into the first quarter, Claire Baenziger netted her 19th goal of the season to draw the game even at the 12:00 mark. The Penguins struggled to maintain possession for the remainder of the quarter, and the Bearcats took advantage as they added 10 goals in the final 11:21 of the quarter to take an 11-1 lead.
Cincinnati's strong held the Penguins scoreless for both the second and third quarters, allowing the Bearcats to build their lead to 18-1 heading into the final 15 minutes.
Showing some Youngstown grit, the Penguins unsurprisingly fought until the final whistle. Claire Baenziger added two more goals in the fourth quarter, both on free-position opportunities, as the Penguins were only outscored by two goals during the final period.
The Bearcats outshot YSU 33-14, including a 13-2 advantage during the first quarter.
Although Cincy won the draw control battle overall, 15-12, YSU found a rhythm in the fourth quarter as they held a 5-1 advantage.
YSU will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Pitt for a 4 p.m. matchup with the Panthers.
