Kimball, Long Ball Lead Penguins to Sweep Over Detroit Mercy

Youngstown, Ohio – Freshman Kennedy Kimball pitched 11.1 innings and picked up two wins, and three different players hit home runs as the Youngstown State softball team swept a doubleheader over Detroit Mercy, 8-0, 10-4, on Saturday afternoon at the YSU Softball Field.

Junior Selah Moyer went 3-for-5 on the day with a home run and six RBIs while seniors Kennedy Dean and Emma Gilkerson each hit home runs to lead Youngstown State, which improves to 13-11 overall and 2-1 in Horizon League play. The Titans fall to 7-18 overall and 1-2 in the league.

Kimball earner her third and fourth victories of the season and notched her second career shutout in the game one win. In game one, Kimball allowed just one hit and faced one batter above the minimum.

The Penguins scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning and added another in the fourth to secure their first conference win.

Senior Kennedy Dean delivered the first pitch on the bottom half of the second over the center-field wall to put the Penguins on the board. After a walk to Ayla Ray and a bunt single by Bree Kohler, Selah Moyer blaster clobbered a three-run shot to right field to put Youngstown State ahead, 4-0.  Walks to Macy Littler and Lydia Wilkerson put runners on first and second for Emma Gilkerson who launched a 3-2 pitch over the left-field fence for a 7-0 lead.

Freshman Naomi Bottomlee reached on a fielder's choice and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

In game two, the Penguins used two big innings to rally from an early 3-0 deficit and pull away for a 10-4 win.

Wilkerson went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in while Moyer went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the Penguins offense. Kimball allowed four hits and struck out seven in 6.1 innings of relief to earn her second win of the day.

Detroit Mercy jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. The Penguins quickly answered with five runs in the bottom of the frame. Three consecutive walks to Wilkerson, Gilkerson and Tai Turner loaded the bases, and Dean's sacrifice fly plated Wilkerson with the Penguins' first run.

Ray walked and Bree Kohler's bases-loaded hit by pitch scored Gilkerson. Moyer's line drive off the pitcher scored Turner with the game-tying run and Ray and Kohler each scored on a throwing error.

After the Titans added a run in the top of the third, the Penguins plated four runs in the bottom half to take a 9-4 lead. Two-run singles by Moyer and Wilkerson keyed Youngstown State's four-run frame.

Wilkerson added another run-scoring single in the bottom of the fifth that plated Moyer with the game's final run.
