Boiling Springs, N.C. — Youngstown Sate's softball team split its two games on the second day of the Runnin' Bulldog Classic on Saturday, beating Furman 8-3 and falling 13-12 to the host Gardner-Webb in eight innings.

Youngstown State scored the first six runs against the Paladins in the morning contest and led by at least five the rest of the game.

Selah Moyer went 2-for-3 with four RBIs to lead the Penguins offensively, and Macy Littler had two hits from the leadoff spot.

Moyer's two-run homer came with one out in the first, and the Penguins added a pair of unearned runs when Kennedy Dean and Tai Turner scored on an error.

Youngstown State added two runs to its lead in the second on a two-out, two-run double by Moyer, giving her four RBIs through two innings.

That was more than enough cushion for YSU pitcher Kelsey Ogin, who went the distance for the Penguins. She allowed six hits and struck out six batters while issuing just two earned runs.

Furman scored on a wild pitch in the third, and Dean's RBI single in the fifth put the Penguins up 7-1. The Paladins added single tallies in the sixth and seventh innings, and Littler plated Naomi Bottomlee on a single in the bottom of the sixth.

The nightcap against Gardner-Webb was a back-and-forth battle as both teams rallied from big deficits.

The Penguins jumped out to a 6-0 lead with a six-run top of the second, but the Runnin' Bulldogs scored the next 10 runs to take a 10-6 lead. YSU forced extra innings with four runs in the seventh, and Gardner-Webb won on a two-run, walk-off double in the eighth after YSU took a 12-11 lead.

Four Penguins had two hits in the game, and Lydia Wilkerson and Bree Kohler broth drove in three runs.

Kohler and Gabbie Evans hit back-to-back RBI singles to start the scoring in the second, and Wilkerson hit a two-run single two batters later to put the Penguins up 4-0. Kennedy Dean then plated Littler on a sacrifice fly, and pinch-runner Ashlyn Bishop scored on a two-out error to make it 6-0.

The Runnin' Bulldogs plated two runs in the second and third innings to cut their deficit to 6-4, and they scored six unearned runs with two outs in the fifth to take a 10-6 lead. Reese Collier delivered the big hit inning, a grand slam after Gardner-Webb tied the score.

Both teams scored in the sixth to make it 11-7, and the Penguins scored four runs with one out in the seventh to rally. YSU loaded the bases with one out, and all three runners scored on Kohler's single and two-base error. Evans followed with a game-tying triple, but Gardner-Webb was able to wiggle out of the inning with back-to-back outs and the game still tied.

Wilkerson scored on a sacrifice fly by Turner in the top of the eighth, and Taylor Dreher hit a walk-off two-run double in the bottom of the inning.

The Penguins used four pitchers in the game, and Gardner-Webb scored on each of them. The loss was charged to Paiton Murphy, who pitched the final two innings.

Youngstown State will play Tarleton State at 10 a.m. on Sunday to finish its five games on the opening weekend.
