The Youngstown State Women's Lacrosse team dropped their season opener 20-6 to Bucknell on Friday evening at the WATTS.
The contest was the debut for new Head Coach Liza Oakley, who was an assistant coach for the Bison for the previous three seasons.
The Penguins were led offensively by Claire Baenziger who scored twice and added an assist. Overall, five different Guins scored goals, including the first of Maya Griffin's career.
Bucknell was led by Caleigh Cummiskey who had six goals and an assist while Megan Krestinski had three goals and five assists. Overall, nine different Bison had goals.
Trailing 1-0, the Penguins tied the contest on a goal by Ava Kreutzer just over four minutes into the contest. Neither team could find the back of the net until the final three minutes of the frame when the Bison scored twice to lead 3-1 after one.
In the second, Beanziger ended a 4-0 run by the Bison with a tally at the 10:20 mark to pull within 5-2. Bucknell added a pair of goals in a span of 1:35 of the second and led 7-2 at halftime.
In the third, Ally Garrett scored for the Penguins just 47 seconds into the period. Down 9-3, Mia Yuris scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Gwen Bogash making it 9-4 with 7:06 remaining. Â The Bison scored three times in a span of 1:40 to extend their advantage.
In the fourth, Baenziger scored her second goal of the game while Griffin had her first career goal at the 11:06 mark.
Goalie Brooke Harper was credited with eight saves on the evening. Mackenzie Flannigan had a team-high three caused turnovers. YSU and Bucknell were tied at 14 draw controls each. Molly Brooks added her first career assist for the Guins.
YSU returns to action on Sunday when it plays host to Old Dominion. First draw at the WATTS is set for Noon.
