Dayton, Ohio – Five players scored in double figures, and the Youngstown State men's basketball team made 14 3-pointers but suffered a 93-83 setback to Horizon League leader Wright State on Thursday evening at the Nutter Center.
Youngstown State fall to 9-10 overall and 2-6 in the Horizon League while the Raiders improve to 12-7 overall and 7-1 in league action.
Senior Bryson Dawkins led the Penguins with 19 points while Vlad Salaridze posted a season-high 17 points and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. Seniors Jason Nelson and Imanuel Zorgvol and freshman Jaiden Haynes each scored 11 points. Zorgvol also grabbed four rebounds.
Leading the Raiders was TJ Burch with 24 points and Kellen Pickett with 18.
Youngstown State used an 18-9 run over the final 5:59 of the first half to turn an eight-point deficit into a one-point halftime lead.
Trailing 33-25 after a layup by Burch, Drew King and Dawkins hit back-to-back 3-pointers to trim the WSU lead to 33-31. A layup by Haynes knotted the game at 37-37 at the 2:40 mark before the Raiders scored the next five of the next six points to regain a four-point edge, 42-38.
Youngstown State scored the last five points of the half on a putback by Salaridze with 58 seconds left and a Dawkins 3-pointer at the 30 seconds mark.
Three-pointers by Nelson and Salaridze to open the second half gave the Penguins a 49-46 lead at the 18-minute mark, but the Raiders went on a 9-0 run over the next 2:23 to take a 55-49 lead.
Haynes hit his second 3-pointer of the game to get the Penguins back within three, 67-64, and, following a Pickett layup, Salaridze's 3-pointer with 9:05 to go sliced the lead to 69-67.
The Raiders scored four straight to push their lead back to six points, 73-67, at the 8:25 mark. Salaridze's layup with 7:01 remaining brought the Penguins within four, 73-69, but the Penguins would not get any closer.
Youngstown State visits Cleveland State, Saturday, Jan. 17. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
