Penguins Drop League Opener at Green Bay in Four Sets

Green Bay, Wis. — Abbie Householder and Kameron Blizniak delivered double-doubles, but Youngstown State's volleyball team fell in four sets at Green Bay on Friday in both teams' Horizon League opener. The set scores from the Kress Center were 24-26, 25-20, 25-20, 27-25.

Householder had 13 kills and 11 digs, while Blizniak contributed 31 assists and 10 digs to go along with a team-high three aces. Maria Insana had 16 digs to lead the back row defense, and Taya Nordmann posted seven blocks and six kills from the middle blocker position.

Diane Pichelman led Green Bay with 19 kills on 41 attempts and a .415 attack percentage. The Phoenix had 12 more kills than the Penguins and held a .219-.172 advantage in hitting percentage.

The match featured 36 ties and 16 lead changes, with two sets extending beyond 25 points.

Youngstown State led 14-10 in the opening set following a block by Nordmann and Gabriela Machin, but Green Bay rallied and took a 16-15 lead. The Phoenix eventually built their advantage to 23-19 before Youngstown State scored five straight points behind two Nordmann kills, a Householder kill and two aces from Blizniak. Green Bay saved one set point, but it was out of rotation after the sideout to give the Penguins another opportunity. Machin and Nordmann blocked Gillian Knoning to end the set at 26-24.

Green Bay hit .302 over the next two sets, and Koning had five kills in the second while Olivia Neumann posted six in the third to help the Phoenix take a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth, Neumann's kill that put Green Bay ahead 6-3 was the largest lead in the set for either team. The Penguins held leads of 23-22 and 24-23 late, but they couldn't extend the match. Two of Green Bay's final five points came from YSU serving errors, and Emma Best finished the contest with an ace.

Youngstown State and Green Bay will have a rematch on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
