Penguins Shine During Summer Competition

Several Youngstown State men's golf student-athletes have had success in summer tournaments over the past few months in preparation for the upcoming 2025-26 season.

Rising senior Ryan Sam earned medalist honors with a four-under-par round of 66 in the Ohio Golf Association's 2025 Ohio Amateur Championship Qualifier at Fairlawn Country Club in Fairlawn, Ohio, on June 23. The Canfield, Ohio, native also advanced through local qualifying for the U.S. Amateur with a single-round score of 69 at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pa., on June 30.

Sam earned a second-place finish with a two-round score of 140 (71-69) in the 2025 Stark County Amateur at Ohio Prestwick Country Club in Uniontown, Ohio, on July 19-20. He tied for third place with a two-round total of 142 (68-74) in the 2025 Summit County Amateur Championship at Good Park Golf Course in Akron, Ohio, on Aug. 2-3. Sam also collected a fourth-place finish with a three-round score of 217 (73-72-72) in the 2025 Greatest Golfer Championships on Aug. 8-10.

Rising junior Jake Ryan advanced through U.S. Open local qualifying and finished tied for second place with a single-round score of 67 in the 2025 U.S. Open Local Qualifying Tournament at Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania, Ohio, on May 5. The Akron, Ohio, native also earned a runner-up finish at the 2025 Greatest Golfer Championships with a three-round score of 213 (70-71-72). Ryan finished tied for 26th with a four-round total of 286 (67-72-74-73) in the 2025 Ohio Amateur Championship at Zanesville Country Club in Zanesville, Ohio, on July 15-18.

Rising redshirt sophomore Nolan Shilling earned medalist honors with a five-under-par round of 65 in the Pennsylvania Golf Association's 109th Open Championship West Region Qualifier at Hannastown Golf Club in Greensburg, Pa., on July 24. The Murrysville, Pa., native also finished fifth with a two-round score of 145 (73-72) at the 32nd WPGA Spring Stroke Play Championship at the Pittsburgh Field Club in Pittsburgh on May 27.

Shilling earned a seventh-place finish with a single-round 72 in the Tri-State Amateur Championship at Nemacolin Resort's Shepherd's Rock course in Farmington, Pa., on May 14. He also finished in the top 15 with a three-round total of 211 (71-71-69) in the 125th WPGA Amateur Championship at Sunnehanna Country Club on July 14-15.

Rising redshirt sophomore Josh Weiner earned a fifth-place finish with a three-round score of 219 (73-70-76) at the 2025 Greatest Golfer Championships on Aug. 8-10.

The Penguins will begin the 2025-26 season on Sept. 8-9 with the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational at Guyan Golf & Country Club in Huntington, W. Va.
