Toledo, Ohio -- Toledo's seven-run fifth inning propelled the Rockets to a 12-1 win over the Youngstown State baseball team in a midweek non-conference affair on Wednesday afternoon at Scott Park.
The Rockets posted a single run in the bottom of the first inning before the Penguins tied the game with a single tally of their own in the top of the second. Toledo struck for seven runs in the home half of the fifth before adding four in the seventh to secure the seven-inning victory.
Kyle Fossum went 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI single and a stolen base while Caleb Hadley singled, stole a base and scored a run. Tommy Rover and Eli Brown each singled and walked while Cole Smith doubled for the Penguins.
YSU starter Tyler Heflin allowed one run on one hit in one inning on the mound while Phil Brennaman, Nolan Kubilus and Gavin Wilms each pitched a scoreless inning of relief. Lane Rhodes was the losing pitcher after surrendering five runs in the fifth while a pair of unearned runs went on Olindo Pezzone's record. Nate Ross and Aidan English were each responsible for a pair of runs out of the bullpen.
Toledo scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning. Kaleb Herbert was hit by a pitch and scored from third base when Luke Walton reached on a fielder's choice.
YSU evened the score at 1-1 with a single tally in the top of the second inning. Hadley was hit by a pitch, advanced to second when Brady Shannon walked and scored from second base on Fossum's two-out RBI single up the middle.
The Rockets regained an 8-1 lead with seven runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth. Josh Cote led off the inning with a solo home run before back-to-back RBI singles from Troy Sudbrook and Charlie Scholvin prompted a pitching change for the Penguins. Cahill delivered a two-run single, Walton raced home when Cote reached on an error and Cahill scored on a wild pitch.
Toledo increased its advantage to 10-1 in the home half of the seventh on a two-run home run by Tre Mariano. Caden Konczak hit a walk-off two-run homer later in the frame for the final margin.
Toledo starter Ryan Kennedy allowed one run on five hits with four strikeouts over 3.2 innings of work. Ryan Hughes was awarded the victory after tossing 1.1 scoreless innings of relief while Brennan McCune did not allow a hit over two scoreless innings.
Youngstown State will conclude its 2025 home schedule at Eastwood Field this weekend with a three-game Horizon League series against Oakland. The Penguins and Golden Grizzlies will open the series on Friday at 11 a.m. in the annual Akron Children's Hospital of Mahoning Valley School Day Game with thousands of area students in attendance.
