Sam Leads Penguins to Sixth-Place Finish at NKU’s The Jewell

Junior Ryan Sam finished tied for 11th individually to lead the Youngstown State men's golf team to a sixth-place finish in The Jewell hosted by Northern Kentucky, which concluded on Tuesday at Elks Run Golf Club in Batavia, Ohio.

The Penguins posted a two-round team total of 580 to finish sixth in the team standings. YSU recorded a 296 in the opening round on Monday before concluding the event with an even-par 284 in the second and final session on Tuesday.

Sam matched his season low with a two-under-par 69 in the second round after a first-round 74 to finish tied for 11th with a two-round score of 143. The junior's final-round 69 featured 12 pars and four birdies as he fired a two-under-par 34 on the front nine.

Nolan Shilling finished tied for 17th with a two-round total of 144 (72-72). The redshirt freshman's second-round 72 included eight pars and five birdies as he carded a one-under-par 35 on the front nine. Shilling's first-round 72 featured 13 pars and a pair of birdies.

Jake Ryan (78-71) and Jacob Sylak (77-72) each finished with a two-round score of 149. Ryan's even-par 71 in the second session included 14 pars and two birdies while Sylak's final-round 72 featured 13 pars and two birdies.

Jordan Kish concluded the tournament with a two-round 152 after rounds of 73 and 79. The freshman's first-round 73 included 11 pars and three birdies. Playing as an individual, Rocco Turner shot rounds of 87 and 80. The freshman birdied the par-four No. 6 during the opening round of competition.

Wright State claimed the tournament title by one shot at five over par with a two-round team total of 573. IU Indy and Northern Kentucky each turned in a 574 to finish tied for second, Bellarmine placed fourth with a 575 and Robert Morris rounded out the top five with a 576.

Xavier's Mason Witt earned medalist honors at three under par with a two-round score of 139 (70-69) while playing as an individual.

Youngstown State will continue its spring schedule on April 13-14 with the Wright State Invitational at Heatherwoode Golf Club in Springboro, Ohio.
