Ann Arbor, Mich. – The Youngstown State women's tennis used a dominant performance in singles to beat Cleveland State, 4-1, in the Horizon League Championship match on a sunny Sunday at Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center.
The championship is YSU's eighth in program history, the second-most in the history of the Horizon League.
Sunday's championship was much different than the previous five in Ann Arbor. Three of the titles were won indoors and two others were claimed in chilly outdoor conditions. Sundays' weather was ideal for tennis on a sun splashed day.
The day didn't start out ideal as the Vikings, who beat YSU 4-3 in the regular season, won the doubles point.
CSU won the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. They won both contests by scores of 6-3. At No. 1, YSU was tied 5-5.
YSU regrouped in singles and came out firing winning all six opening sets to seize momentum.
The first to win was Ghada Dirninger at No. 5 with an impressive 6-0, 6-1 win. At No. 1, Julia Marko turned in a 6-3, 6-3 victory to give the Penguins a 2-1 advantage. At No. 6 singles, Yoana Dudova picked up a 6-4, 7-6 (4) win putting the Guins in front 3-1.
The clincher was at No. 4 at Loreno Cedeno won 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 to set off the championship celebration.
At No. 2, Lili Minich owned a 6-4, 4-5 lead while Yeseniia Ovcharova was tied 6-4, 0-6, 3-3 in her match at No. 3.
The NCAA selection show is set for 5 p.m. on Monday.
