A Glimpse at the Guins
- The Penguins are coming off a conference-series win taking two out of three at Milwaukee. After dropping the first game, 11-6, and trailing, 10-5, in the top of the fifth inning in game two, YSU regrouped during a two-hour long weather delay and scored the next 15 runs to build a 20-10 lead. The Guins held on for a 20-14 win and followed that up with a 7-5 series clinching win on Saturday.
- Senior right fielder Kyle Fossum continued his torrid pace and with his home runs on Friday and Saturday he tied the school record for single-season blasts at 17. He joins Andrew Kendrick, who set the single-season school record with 17 homers in 2017, at the top of the YSU list.
- Fossum has 124 total bases and is closing in on the school record in that category. The school mark is 137 set by Mark Thomas back in 1999. Currently, Fossum's total of 124 ranks him fourth as he moved past Jeff Wehler (121) over the weekend.
- Fossum also has 43 runs scored, 43 RBI, 15 doubles and an impressive .849 slugging percentage. Of his 58 hits, 32 have been for extra bases.
- Redshirt sophomore utility player Nathan Beckley enters the week on a nine-game hitting streak. He has also scored runs in seven straight contests. Beckley owns a .314 batting average over 35 games played and 34 starts. That is second best on the team behind Fossum.
- Junior left fielder Brayden Kuriger has been in the starting lineup the past six contests. Kuriger had five hits in 11 at bats while scoring four runs with three RBI at Milwaukee last week.
- Senior second baseman Cole Smith hit .357 with seven RBI, five hits, three walks and three runs scored in four games this past week. He had three RBI in game one vs. Milwaukee and two in games two and three of the series. In game two he had a key two-run double to give the Guins a 13-10 lead after they trailed 10-4. In game three, he added another two-run double to give YSU at 4-0 lead early in the contest. Had had a two-run homer in game one of the series.
- First baseman Jay Wrona set the school record for walks in a game with five at Milwaukee on Friday. The previous record of four had occurred eight times in program history, most recently by May 2019 by Blaze Glenn.
- Wrona has hit safely in 14 of his last 16 games while reaching base safely in 24 consecutive contests. Wrona is batting .360 and slugging .480 over 26 games played and 22 starts. He also has an on-base percentage of .480.
- Pitcher Brandon Mikos pitched seven strong innings in YSU's 7-5 victory at Milwaukee on Saturday afternoon. He scattered six hits while allowing just two earned runs with five strikeouts and only one walk. It was the longest outing in 45 career appearances and third start of five innings plus this year. He has won his last two decisions with wins over NKU and Milwaukee.
- YSU is under the direction of first-year head coach Trevor Charpie. The Anaheim Hills, Calif., native was named the 10th head coach in program history in June after serving as an assistant for the Penguins in 2024. At 31, Charpie is the third-youngest Division I head baseball coach in the country in 2025.
