Green Bay, Wis. – The Youngstown State softball team (11-36, 3-15 Horizon League) battled back from an early deficit, but its comeback fell short, 8-7, in game two of a doubleheader against Green Bay (12-25, 5-13) on Saturday afternoon at King Park. Youngstown State dropped the opener, 4-1.
Sophomore Lydia Wilkerson went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in while senior Elyssa Imler posted a run-scoring triple and junior Kennedy Dean had an RBI-single.
The Phoenix jumped out to a 5-0 lead through four innings when Wilkerson laced a two-run double to right center to plate Audrey Thomas and Taylor Truran.
Imler tripled home Macy Littler in the top of the sixth to cut the Phoenix to 5-3. Green Bay answered with three runs in the bottom half of the frame to regain a five-run lead, 8-3.
In the top of the seventh, the Penguins scored three runs on a bases-loaded fielding error, and Dean laced a single to right-center field to score Kohler to get within one, 8-7.
In the opener, Wilkerson, Ayla Ray, and Littler each had two hits, and Littler scored the Penguins' lone run.
Youngstown State hosts Kent State in a single game, Tuesday, April 22. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
