Shilling Paces Penguins at Don Benbow Butler Spring Invitational

Redshirt freshman Nolan Shilling finished tied for 16th individually to pace the Youngstown State men's golf team in the two-day Don Benbow Butler Spring Invitational, which concluded on Tuesday from Highland Golf & Country Club in Indianapolis, Ind.

The Penguins finished tied for 10th in the team standings with a three-round total of 873. YSU recorded a team score of 289 in each of the first two rounds on Monday before closing the tournament with a 295 in the final session on Tuesday.

Shilling finished tied for 16th with a career-best three-round score of 212 (68-68-76). The redshirt freshman matched his career-low round with a pair of two-under-par 68's in the first two rounds on Monday. Shilling was tied for second place on the individual leaderboard heading into the final round. Shilling's first-round 68 featured 12 pars and four birdies while his second-round 68 also included four birdies. The Murrysville, Pa., native recorded an eagle on the par-five No. 12 during the final session on Tuesday.

Ryan Sam finished with a three-round total of 218 (74-71-73) while Jacob Sylak recorded a 223 (73-75-75). Michael Porter turned in rounds of 75, 77 and 71 for a three-round 223 while Jordan Kish concluded the event with a 226 (74-75-78). Playing as an individual, Josh Weiner carded a three-round score of 227 (72-83-72).

Butler claimed the tournament title at 11 under par with a three-round team total of 829. DePaul finished as the runner-up with an 840 while Loyola Chicago placed third with an 852. IU Indy was fourth with an 858 and Oakland rounded out the top five with an 859.

Butler's Leo Zurovac earned medalist honors at four under par with a three-round score of 206 (73-68-65) while four different golfers tied for second place.

Youngstown State will continue its spring season on April 7-8 with The Jewell hosted by Northern Kentucky at  Elks Run Golf Club in Batavia, Ohio.
