Rock Hill, S.C. – Senior Taylor Truran and junior Kennedy Dean each hit home runs, but the Youngstown State softball team dropped a pair of games on Tuesday at Terry Field.
The Penguins fell to Mount St. Mary's, 5-4, in nine innings before Winthrop pulled out an 8-3 victory.
Sophomore Lydia Wilkerson went 4-for-7 with two runs batted in on the day while super senior Elyssa Imler went 3-for-6.
In the opener against Mount St. Mary's, Wilkerson went 2-for-4 and drove in a run while Imler Imler had a pair of hits and drove in a run.
Dean clobber her second home run of the season, a solo shot, to put the Penguins on the board first in the bottom of the second inning.
Wilkerson delivered a run-scoring single to plate Ashlyn Bishop and give the Penguins a 2-0 lead through five frames.
Mount St. Mary's knotted the game with two runs in the top of the sixth and took a 3-2 lead with a run in the top of the eighth.
The Penguins knotted the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth on Imler's sacrifice fly.
The Eagles added two runs in the top of the ninth for a 5-3 advantage. Macy Littler's run-scoring fielder's choice cut the deficit to 5-4, but the Penguins could not mount the comeback.
Against Winthrop, Wilkerson and sophomore Reese Campbell-Schaller each tallied two hits, and Truran belted her third career home run to lead the Penguins.
Youngstown State visits No. 11 South Carolina, Wednesday, March 5. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
