Youngstown, Ohio – Sophomore Lydia Wilkerson recorded a total of five hits, and sophomore Macy Littler and freshman Ayla Ray each posted four hits, but the Youngstown State softball team dropped a doubleheader to Cleveland State, 7-4, 3-1, on Friday at the YSU Softball Field.
The Penguins fell to 4-21 overall and 0-3 in the Horizon League while the Vikings improve to 8-12 overall and 3-0 in league action.
Littler and Wilkerson each went 3-for-4 in the nightcap and Wilkerson drove in the Penguins lone run in the bottom of the seventh.
Sophomore pitcher Maci Boggess turned in a solid outing in the circle scattering nine hits with six strikeouts and allowing just one earned run.
In the opener, Ray went 3-for-4 with a run scored and drove in a run while Wilkerson had two singles.
Senior Elyssa Imler went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in to spark the Penguins' offense.
The Penguins trailed 6-0 after five-and-a-half innings before they plated four runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Senior Taylor Truran led off the frame with a single and Wilkerson's one-out single advanced pinch-runner Ellie Hardman to third. Ray singled plated Hardman with a single to left-center field, and after Bree Kohler's infield single loaded the bases, Imler laced a double to right-center field clearing the bases.
The Vikings added a run in the top of the sixth for the final score.
Youngstown State visits Ohio State, Wednesday, March 19. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Buckeye Field.
