Youngstown State's bowling team went unbeaten in its five head-to-head matches and posted the highest pinfall in the field to open the Music City Classic on Friday. The three-day tournament is being hosted by Vanderbilt at the Smyrna Bowling Center in Smyrna, Tenn.
The fourth-ranked Penguins totaled 5,282 pins in their five Baker matches, and they have a 90-pin lead on second-place Vandy with six more matches of qualifying remaining at the event. Youngstown State was consistent throughout the day, scoring above 200 in 20 of their 25 games and above 190 in three more.
YSU improved its sets over each of its first four matches and it climbed into the top spot in the standings. The Penguins began the round with a 1,031-832 win over Marian, and they followed that with a 1,045-854 victory over Alabama A&M and a 1,066-567 win against Quincy.
Youngstown State had its best set of the day against its only ranked opponent on the docket, firing a 1,112 in a 64-pin victory over No. 2 Jacksonville State. YSU finished the day with a 1,028-898 win over Lewis.
The Penguins will begin traditional play with three consecutive positional matches on Saturday. YSU will start against No. 5 Wichita State, followed by No. 3 Vanderbilt and No. 8 North Carolina A&T. The challenging slate will continue against No. 7 Sam Houston in a regularly scheduled match, and the round will conclude against No. 19 UAB. The gauntlet will continue Sunday morning with a match against No. 6 Arkansas State to conclude qualifying.
