Malayna Calo Signs to Join YSU Bowling Program

Youngstown, Ohio — Youngstown State head bowling coach Doug Kuberski is excited to announce that Malayna Calo is the Penguins' first signee during the 2025 fall signing period.

"Malayna brings a wealth of experience and has consistently demonstrated excellence on and off the lanes in both individual and team environments," Kuberski said. "She also brings incredible passion for the game, along with a strong work ethic and character. We are thrilled to welcome Malayna to the Penguin family."

Calo will come to Youngstown State with an impressive list of accomplishments. She was named to the 2024-25 Dexter All-American Team, and she was a member of Junior Team USA's Developmental Squad in 2024. That invitation to the national team came after Calo finished ninth in the U15 Division at the 2023 Junior Gold Championships, and she finished 33rd in the U18 Division in 2025. Calo is a also two-time Florida Pepsi winner.

During the high school season bowling for Bell Creek Academy, Calo finished second at the 2025 Florida high School Athletic Association High School Bowling Finals. She was also third among all seniors at the Florida High School Singles Championship. With Calo as a two-time MVP, her team has finished ninth at nationals in 2022, placed second at the Florida state event in 2021, and won five district titles. Individually, she is a two-time district winner and a seven-time state qualifier.

Academically, Calo is ranked in the top 15 of her graduating class at Sumner High School and is a member of the National Honor Society. She intends to major in chemistry at Youngstown State with the goal of becoming a pharmacist.
