The Youngstown State football team picked up a 48-29 over Indiana State in the regular-season home finale on Saturday afternoon at Stambaugh Stadium.
The Penguins improve 7-3 overall and 4-3 in the MVFC while the Sycamores fall to 3-8 and 1-6.
QB Beau Brungard threw for three touchdowns and rushed for three scores to account for six more touchdowns on the season. He has 42 total touchdowns on the season with 21 rushing scores and 21 passing touchdowns.
Defensively, Mike Wells had a monster afternoon recording 10 total tackles, four TFLS and 3.5 sacks. He also had a quarterback hurry.
The Guins never trailed but had to battle throughout against the pesky Sycamores.
Brungard scored on an eight-yard run after a Makai Shahid interception in the first quarter. After ISU closed within 7-6, Brungard scored from a yard out to extend the lead the 14-6.
In the second quarter, Indiana State pulled within 14-12 on a two-yard scoring run by Nick Osho. Brungard's third touchdown of the first half pushed the Guins' lead to 21-12, but again ISU closed within two on a 78-yard pass from Keegan Patterson to Rashad Rochelle. Â
Brungard's first touchdown toss of the game was a 20-yard pass to Flash Wison with 3:54 left in the half, but the Sycamores answered with a 74-yard scoring connection from Patterson to Rochelle. The Guins took advantage of a Patterson fumble as Lastokva kicked a 39-yard field goal with six seconds left in the first half.
The second half was all Penguins as they outscored the Sycamores 17-3.
TE Austin Bray caught two touchdown passes in his return to lineup in the second half. In the third, he caught a two-yard touchdown toss from Brungard before hauling in another from five yards out in the fourth quarter.
Late in the game, the team's exchanged field goals for the final margin.
Brungard completed 23-of-30 passes for 264 yards while rushing for 90 on 17 carries. Jaden Gilbert rushed nine times for 91 yards. Max Tomczak caught seven passes for 109 yards while Wilson had six grabs for 61 yards and a score.
The Penguins travel to UNI next Saturday to take on the Panthers. Kickoff at the UNI-Dome is set for 2 p.m. Eastern time.
