Penguins Visit St. Bonaventure for First Meeting in 20 Years Saturday

Setting the Scene
The Youngstown State men's basketball team (2-1) plays its next four games on the road starting with a matchup against Atlantic-10 member St. Bonaventure, Saturday, Nov. 15. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at the Reilly Center. The game will be aired on 570 WKBN, ESPN+ and the YES Network.

Up Next
Youngstown State visits in-state foe and Mid-American Conference member Toledo, Wednesday, Nov. 19. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Savage Arena in Toldeo, Ohio. The game will be aired on 570 WKBN  and ESPN+.

Last Time Out
Seven players scored in double figures and every player that appeared scored at least four points in the Penguins' 115-53 win over Penn State Shenango on Nov. 10. Senior Imanuel Zorgvol tied a career high with 18 points and posted six rebounds to lead the Penguins. Freshman Jaiden Haynes scored a career-high 14 points with four 3-pointers, two assist and four steals while Cam Polak connected on four 3-pointers and poured in 14 points. Senior Cris Carroll and junior Tae Blackshear each contributed 12 points, and senior Bryson Dawkins added 11 points and Jason Nelson contributed 10.

Scouting St. Bonaventure
St. Bonaventure enters the game with an overall record of 3-0 and is coming off a 75-66 win over Siena on Nov. 12. The Bonnies are led by Darryl Simmons II who is averaging 20 points per game. Frank Mitchell is averaging a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds per game and shooting 52.6 percent from the field. Cayden Charles is also scoring in double figures with 14 points per contest. As a team, the Bonnies are averaging 77.7 points per game and shooting 47.1 percent from the floor. St. Bonaventure is also allowing just 66.3 points per game.

Series vs. St. Bonaventure
This is the eighth meeting between Youngstown State and St. Bonaventure in a series dating back to 1940. It is also the first meeting in 20 years and just the second since 1952. The Bonnies own a 6-1 advantage in the all-time series and have won the last four contests. St. Bonaventure won the last meeting, 66-58, on Dec. 10, 2005, in St. Bonaventure, N.Y. The last time Youngstown State defeated St. Bonaventure was a 58-50 victory on Jan. 18, 1947, in St. Bonaventure, N.Y.

Carroll Named POW
Youngstown State senior Cris Carroll has been named the Under Armour Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. This is the first time Carroll has earned the weekly award. Carroll led the Penguins to at 1-1 record last week, including a 90-81 win at Grand Canyon on Nov. 7. Carroll averaged 16 points and 4.5 rebounds per game and shot 57.1 percent (12-for-21) from the field and 50 percent (6-for-12) from 3-point range during the week. He led the Penguins with 18 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field, including three 3-pointers in the Penguins' loss to Pittsburgh, and Carroll added 14 points on 5-for-9 shooting with three more 3-pointers in the win over Grand Canyon.

Grand Canyon Recap
The Youngstown State men's basketball team picked up its first win of the 2025-26 campaign with an impressive 90-81 win over Mountain West Conference member Grand Canyon on Nov. 7. Imanuel Zorgvol led four players scoring in double figures with a career-high 18 points. Junior Drew King just missed a triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists while senior Cris Carroll and Tae Blackshear each added 14 points. As a team, the Penguins made 12 3-pointers.

It's Good to Be King
Junior guard Drew King, a Phoenix, Ariz., native had quite the homecoming in the Penguins' 90-81 victory over Grand Canyon. Drew came off the bench the second double-double of his career with 10 points and 10 rebounds. He nearly became the third player in YSU history to post a triple-double dishing out eight assists.

IMan Steppin' Up
Senior Imanuel Zorgvol turned in a career-best game against Grand Canyon. The 7-foot center scored a career-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field with his first career 3-pointer and four blocks. He matched his career high with 18 points against Penn State Shenango on Nov. 10. His .833 field-goal percentage leads the Horizon league and ranks fifth nationally.

Blackshear Hits Career High
Junior Tae Blackshear posted the first double-digit scoring game of his career against Grand Canyon on Nov. 7. Blackshear scored 14 points off the bench and went 7-for-7 from the free-throw line.
