Youngstown, Ohio – Seven players scored in double figures and every player that appeared scored at least four points as the Youngstown State men's basketball team defeated Penn State Shenango, 115-53, on Monday evening at Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center.
Youngstown State improves to 2-1 on the year while the Lions fall to 1-2.
Leading the Penguins was senior Imanuel Zorgvol who tied a career high with 18 points and posted six rebounds.
Freshman Jaiden Haynes scored a career-high 14 points with four 3-pointers, two assist and four steals while Cam Polak connected on four 3-pointers and poured in 14 points.
Senior Cris Carroll and junior Tae Blackshear each contributed 12 points, and senior Bryson Dawkins added 11 points and Jason Nelson contributed 10.
After a slugging start that saw the Penguins own a nine-point, 43-34, halftime advantage, Youngstown State caught fire in the second half making its first 10 field-goal attempts and scoring the first 15 points after halftime to boost its lead to 58-34 with 16:45 left in the game.
Just over two minutes later, a dunk by Zorvgol extended the Penguins advantage to 66-36 at the 14:07 mark.
Youngstown State went on a 27-5 run over the next seven minutes to expand its lead to 52 points, 93-41, with 7:48 to go.
Youngstown State shot 65.8 percent (25-for-38) from the field in the second half and connected on 8-for-14 from behind the arc.
The Penguins 72 points in the second half are the fourth-most points scored in half in school history, and the 62-point margin of victory is tied for the sixth-highest in a single game.
Youngstown State was credited with 24 assists and 38 made baskets led by Drew Kings six dimes, and the Penguins' 20 steals are the sixth most in a single game and the most since YSU set the record of 37 on Nov. 14, 2017.
In the first half, Youngstown State shot just 34.2 percent from the field, and, after missing its first 10 3-point attempts, connected on just 4-for-17 from behind the arc for 23.5 percent.
Youngstown State visits Atlantic-10 member St. Bonaventure, Saturday, Nov. 15. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at the Reilly Center in St. Bonaventure, N.Y.
