Youngstown, Ohio — Youngstown State freshman setter Kameron Blizniak has been named an Under Armour Horizon League Volleyball Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 19, the conference office announced on Monday.
Blizniak is the first freshman to win the league's weekly award this season, and she is the first Penguin setter to claim it since Val Jeffery in 2014. Blizniak joins teammate Gabriela Machin as winners in 2025, giving YSU two different winners for the first time since the 2017 campaign.
A native of Romeoville, Ill., Blizniak led Youngstown State's red-hot offense last week as the Penguins earned an impressive road sweep at IU Indy. The Jaguars came into the weekend on a five-match winning streak and were tied for third in the Horizon League standings.
Blizniak averaged 11.22 assists per set as the Penguins posted a .314 attack percentage in Indianapolis, which was 58 points higher than any other team in the conference last week. She recorded 57 assists in YSU's five-set win on Friday and added 44 in the four-set victory on Saturday.
IU Indy came into the week allowing just 10.46 assists per set, the best in the Horizon League, and opponents were hitting just .205 against the Jaguars. Only three teams had hit above .300 against IU Indy all season, but surpassed that mark in both matches, hitting .316 on Friday and .311 on Saturday. Blizniak added 10 digs on Saturday for a double-double, and she averaged 2.00 digs per set for the week.
For the year, Blizniak ranks sixth in the Horizon League with 8.44 assists per set, and she is fifth with 684 total assists. That is the sixth-highest total ever by a YSU freshman.
Youngstown State will open the second half of Horizon League play by hosting Milwaukee on Friday at 4 p.m. at Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center.
