Fort Wayne, Ind. – Junior Cris Carroll recorded his first career double-double, but the Youngstown State men's basketball team dropped a 90-81 decision to Horizon League foe Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday night at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
The Penguins fall to 10-6 overall and 5-1 in Horizon League games while the Mastodons improve to 11-6 overall and 4-2 in league action.
Carroll tied a career high with 20 points and posted a career-best 12 rebounds to go along with five assists. Nico Galette scored 14 points, EJ Farmer poured in 12 and David Wilkerson added a career-high 10 points.
Leading the Mastodons was Jalen Jackson with 25 points and Chandler Cuthrell had 19 points while Rasheed Bello added 17 points.
The Penguins jumped out to a 7-5 lead less than four minutes into the game, but the Mastodons went on an 11-0 run to take a nine-point lead with 12:54 left.
Following a basket by Jason Nelson, Purdue Fort Wayne scored the next seven points to take a 14-point lead, 23-9. The Mastodons would build their first half lead to as many as 16, 35-19, at the 4:02 before the Penguins would trim the deficit to 41-29 at the intermission.
Purdue Fort Wayne continued to its hot hand after halftime and pushed the lead to 20 in the second half.
Down 78-58 with 6:33 left, the Penguins made a late charge with a 12-2 run over the next 2:35 to get within 10, 80-70. Farmer began the spurt with a three-point play and, after a Mastodon basket, Wilkerson scored seven straight for YSU to cut the lead to 80-68. Carroll's put back at the 3:58 mark got the Penguins within 10.
Purdue Fort Wayne was able to push the lead back to 15 and seal the game.
Youngstown State returns home top face Northern Kentucky, Wednesday, Jan. 8. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center.
