Arlington, Texas — Youngstown State's bowling team ran into a gauntlet of high-scoring opponents on Saturday as qualifying continued at the PVAMU Invitational. The three-day tournament is being held at The ITRC.
The Penguins went 1-4 in their five head-to-head matches in the traditional format on Saturday, and three of their opponents had sets above 1,100. Youngstown State averaged 206.5 on Saturday, and it has one more match of qualifying before bracket play begins on Sunday.
Youngstown State had sets of 1,038, 1,046, 1,054, 1,067 and 957 on Saturday, but the pace in the talented field was higher as the Penguins finished the day in ninth place. YSU had a three-pin win over Duquesne in its second match and a three-pin loss to Maryville in match three, and Louisiana Tech, North Carolina A&T and Arkansas State each had sets over 1,100.
Kirsten Moore was YSU's highest-scoring individual on Saturday with a five-game total of 1,077. She started the round with back-to-back 245 games, and she fired a 237 in her fourth game. Moore is 21st in the individual standings, and Jade Cote is tied for 30th with a 1,031. Hannah Miller came in as a substitute after the first match and averaged 217 over her four games.
The Penguins will finish qualifying with another traditional match against Jacksonville State on Sunday at 9:25 a.m. Eastern. YSU will then bowl two best-of-seven Baker matches to determine its final placing at the tournament.
