Penguins Go Undefeated on Opening Day at Northeast Classic

New Castle, Del. — Youngstown State's bowling team won all five of its matches and posted the third-highest pinfall among the 38-team field at the Northeast Classic on Friday. The three-day tournament at Bowlerama opens the Penguins' spring schedule.

The Penguins posted a total round score of 5,288 for a 211.5 average per game as they went 5-0 in the Baker pinfall format on Friday. They will bowl in five more qualifying matches on Saturday ahead of Sunday's championship bracket.

Nebraska holds the top spot after Friday following a 5,443 round, and Sam Houston is in the second slot with four more pins than the Penguins. Vanderbilt is fourth as one of six teams that shot between 5,183 and 5,127. Youngstown State will need to remain among the top four to have a chance to compete for the title on Sunday.

The Penguins opened the spring with a 1,081 set in a 176-pin victory over Valparaiso, and that set the tone for the rest of the round. YSU won its five matches by an average score of 196.4 pins. After topping Valparaiso, LIU and Holy Family, Youngstown State's best set came in a high-scoring fourth match, a 1,113-1,018 victory over Wright State. YSU finished the round with a 974-851 victory over 15th-ranked Tulane.

The tournament shifts to the traditional format for Saturday's round, which begins at 9:25 a.m with the Penguins taking on No. 18 Maryland Eastern Shore. All five of YSU's matches will be streamed on the YSUsports YouTube channel.
