Youngstown, Ohio – Junior Chloe Weiland scored two goals and junior Emma Rigone scored a goal and two assists to lead the Youngstown State women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne Sunday at Farmers National Bank Field.
The Penguins improve to 3-7-2 overall and 1-3 in the Horizon League while the Mastodons fall to 6-5-1 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Weiland is the first YSU player to score multiple goals in a game since Elis Klein Spindola had a hat trick against Robert Morris in 2022.
The Penguins, who outshot the Mastodons 13-9, scored a season-high with three goals against Purdue Fort Wayne.
Youngstown State jumped out to a quick 1-0 within the first 10 minutes of the game.
Taylor Berry controlled the ball in Mastodon territory and slid a pass back to freshman Teagan Wahle. Walhe launched a pass into the box, and after it bounced at the six, Rigone's header near the right post found the back of the net. It marked Rigone's first goal of the season while Berry tallied her fifth assist of the season. Wahle recorded her first career assist.
The Penguins extended their lead to 2-0 on Weiland's first goal of the game at the 40:28 mark. After a yellow card on the Mastodons, Rigone lifted the free kick into the left side of the box and Weiland's header went over the outstretched arms of the Purdue Fort Wayne goalkeeper.
Purdue Fort Wayne cut the lead in half on a goal by Emersyn Geik in the 66th minute.
Four minutes later, Rigone connected with Weiland for the second time on another free kick. The Mastodons were called for a foul; Rigone found Weiland on the left side of the box for her second goal of the year. Â
