Youngstown, Ohio – Redshirt freshman Maya Naimoli recorded her first career shutout, and freshman Teagan Wahle scored the first goal of her career to lead the Youngstown State women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) on Thursday evening at Farmers National Bank Field.
The Penguins improve to 1-0-1 on season while the Red Flash falls to 1-1-1.
YSU and Saint Francis battled through a scoreless first half for more than 41 minutes before Wahle broke the deadlock.
The Penguins pushed the ball down the left side and force it to the middle of the penalty box to Elis Klein Spindola. Her quick touch pass back set up Wahle perfectly from 23 yards out for a one-timer to the lower-left corner of the net to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead at the 41:28 mark.
Youngstown State extended its lead to 2-0 after converting on its only corner kick of the night. At the 64:04 mark of the game, sophomore Lenea Guerrero lofted a corner into center of the box and junior Taylor Berry's perfectly timed header into the top center put YSU up two.
Berry's notched her second goal of the season while Klein Spindola and Guerrero tallied their first assists of the year.
The Penguins visit Eastern Michigan, Sunday, Aug. 25. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Ypsilanti, Mich.
