YSU Baseball Program Receives ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award

The Youngstown State baseball program has been recognized as a recipient of the American Baseball Coaches Association's Team Academic Excellence Award for the 2023-24 academic year, the organization announced on Wednesday.
The award honors high school and collegiate programs coached by ABCA members that post a grade point average (GPA) over 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for the current academic year. YSU was one of 130 NCAA Division I programs and one of four Horizon League members to be honored. The Penguins have now earned the impressive academic distinction each of the last seven seasons.
YSU finished the 2023-24 academic year with a 3.45 cumulative GPA after posting a mark of 3.45 during the spring semester. The Penguins have now achieved a team GPA of above 3.0 for 14 straight semesters. The team had an impressive 24 players post a GPA of at least 3.5 during the spring.
In addition, Youngstown State had a pair of student-athletes earn Horizon League All-Academic honors in 2024. Ian Francis and Braden Gebhardt were each named to the Horizon League All-Academic Team for their combined performance on the field and in the classroom. Francis and Gebhardt were also selected to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team for 2023-24.
