Pitching Gems Lead Penguins to Sweep at Robert Morris

Moon Township, Pa. – Behind the strength of a pair of dominant pitching performances, the Youngstown State softball team swept a doubleheader from Robert Morris, 1-0, 2-0, on Tuesday afternoon at the North Athletic Complex.

Senior Sophie Howell fired a three-hit, complete-game shutout with five strikeouts in 1-0 game one victory. Howell gave up just three singles and did not allow a walk as she earned her 15th win of the season.

In game two, senior Devan Ryan allowed just three hits in five scoreless innings with one strikeout for her sixth victory of the year. Howell struck out four in two scoreless innings of relief to record her third save of the season.

The Penguins improve to 25-12 overall and 12-2 in the Horizon League while the Colonials fall to 10-17 overall and 5-6 in the league.

After four perfect innings from Robert Morris game one starter Kaitlyn Molitoris, the Penguins finally reached base when Kennedy Dean reached on an error in the top of the fifth. Elyssa Imler singled to break up the no-hitter and stole second to get into scoring position.

Freshman Macy Littler slice a triple down the left-field line to score Imler with the game's only run.

In the nightcap, senior Sara Fessler was responsible for both Penguins runs with a solo home run, her seventh of the year, to lead off the game.

Fessler added an insurance run in the top of the fifth with a single to left field that plated Littler, who reached on an error.

Fessler and Littler each had two hits for the Penguins.

Youngstown State and Robert Morris conclude their three-game series, Wednesday, April 10. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. in Moon Township, Pa.
