Rochester, Mich. – Oakland scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the Youngstown State softball team, 5-4, on Friday afternoon.
The Penguins' 11-game win streak was snapped, and they fell to 22-11 overall and 9-1 in the Horizon League. Oakland improves to 13-11 overall and 5-2 in the league.
Sara Fessler went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI while Elyssa Imler had two hits and scored a run. Freshman Autumn Behlke added a run-scoring single.
Youngstown State jumped on the board first in the top of the first when Fessler scored on Imler's fielder's choice.
Oakland took a 2-1 lead with two runs, including one unearned, in the bottom of the second inning. Youngstown State answered with runs in the top of the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 4-2 lead.
In the third, Fessler reached on a bunt single, advanced to second on a ground out, and scored on Jillian Jakse's single to left field to tie the game.
Fessler then drilled a run-scoring single to center field to plate Hailey Niederkohr, who single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt, to give the Penguins a 3-2 lead.
Behlke's single down the right-field line in the top of the fifth plated Imler to give the Penguins a 4-2 advantage.
Youngstown State and Oakland close out the series with a doubleheader, Saturday, April 6. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
