Rochester, Mich. – Senior Devan Ryan struck out three and scattered just six hits to earn her fifth win of the year as the Youngstown State softball team defeated Oakland, 3-1, in game one of a doubleheader at the Oakland Softball Field.
The Penguins dropped the nightcap, 3-0. Youngstown State is now 23-12 overall and 10-2 in Horizon League play while the Golden Grizzlies improve to 14-12 overall and 6-3 in league play.
Youngstown State cranked out 10 hits led by Lydia Wilkerson, Jillian Jakse, Elyssa Imler and Conchetta Rinaldi with two each.
After three scoreless innings, Jakse ripped a two-out run-scoring double to score Sara Fessler to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Grizzlies knotted the game in the bottom half of the frame, but the Penguins answered with two more runs in the top of the fifth.
Kennedy Dean led off the inning with a walk and singles by Imler and Rinaldi loaded the bases. Freshman Autumn Behlke's bases-loaded walk plate pinch-runner Sydney Payne. Hailey Niederkohr followed with a single up the middle to score Imler with an insurance run.
Sophie Howell relieved Ryan with a runner on first but induced three ground outs to pick up her second save of the season.
Youngstown State had just three hits in game two.
The Penguins face Robert Morris in a three-game series, April 9-10, in Moon Township, Pa.
