Penguins Fall Twice to Milwaukee on Saturday at Eastwood

Niles, Ohio -- Milwaukee jumped out to early leads in both games and went on to sweep a Horizon League doubleheader from the Youngstown State baseball team on Saturday at Eastwood Field. The Panthers won the opener 10-3 before picking up a 10-2 victory in the nightcap.

Game 1 Recap

Milwaukee scored the first eight runs of the contest and went on to defeat the Youngstown State baseball team 10-3 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.

The Panthers scored in each of their first five at bats to build a 7-0 lead and a single run in the seventh gave the visitors an 8-0 edge. The Penguins notched a single tally in the home half of the seventh, but the Panthers got the run back in the top half of the eighth. Milwaukee added another run in the top of the ninth to lead 10-1 before YSU pushed across a pair of runs in the home half for the final margin.

Teddy Ruffner went 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored while Eli Brown went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

YSU starter Jacob Gehring suffered the loss after allowing five runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts over four innings. Nolan Kubilus was responsible for three runs on five hits in three innings of relief while Zach Stayduhar and Lane Rhodes each allowed a run in one inning on the mound.

Milwaukee jumped in front quickly in the top of the first inning on a solo home run from Justin Hausser. The Panthers recorded another single run in the top of the second as Zach Lane hit a leadoff single and scored on an RBI double by Teige Lethert. Milwaukee's lead grew to 4-0 in the top of the third after a two-run single from Lane.

The Panthers pushed their advantage to 5-0 in the top of the fourth as Lethert hit a leadoff single and scored on an RBI single by Sean Tillmon. In the top of the fifth, Lane hit a one-out double and scored on an RBI bunt single by Gabe Roessler. Lethert then drove home Roessler with a two-out RBI double to right field to put Milwaukee in front 7-0. The Panthers added another single run in the top of the seventh when Hansen hit a leadoff double and scored on an RBI single from Q Phillips.

The Penguins got on the board in the bottom of the seventh as Ruffner hit a leadoff triple down the right field line and scored on an RBI groundout by RJ Sherwood.

Milwaukee got the run back in the top of the eighth as pinch hitter Dallan Quigley drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on a wild pitch. The Panthers tacked on an unearned run in the top of the ninth as Lane reached on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Lethert.

The Penguins scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Brown reached with a one-out infield single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a single from Ruffner. Brown scored on a wild pitch before Brett Stanley drove in Ruffner when he reached on a fielder's choice.

Milwaukee starter Luke Hansel earned the victory by allowing one run on five hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings.

Game 2 Recap

Milwaukee scored eight runs over the first three innings and went on to defeat the Youngstown State baseball team 10-2 in the second game of Saturday's twin bill.

The Panthers scored three runs in the first inning and five in the third to take an early 8-0 advantage. The Penguins plated a single run in the third and another in the fifth but could not muster enough offense to overcome the early deficit. Milwaukee added two insurance runs in the ninth for the final margin.

Ian Francis went 2-for-4 with an RBI double while eight other Penguins added one hit apiece. Stanley and Alejandro Covas each singled, walked and scored a run.

YSU starter Brandon Mikos took the loss after allowing eight runs on eight hits over 2.1 innings of work. Braden Gebhardt surrendered two runs on four hits with five strikeouts in six strong innings of relief. The sophomore left-hander blanked the Panthers over five straight frames between the fourth and eighth innings.

Milwaukee took an early advantage for the second straight game as Carson Hansen hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning. Lane, Phillips, Thomas Otto and Roessler all had run-scoring hits during Milwaukee's five-run third that put it ahead 8-0.

YSU scored its first run in the bottom of the third when Covas drew a one-out walk and Francis followed with an RBI double to left center. The Penguins recorded another single run in the fifth as Stanley hit a leadoff single and came around to score on an RBI single by Matt Thompson.

The Panthers struck for a pair of runs in the top of the ninth as Phillips delivered an RBI single and Roessler added an RBI groundout.

Milwaukee starter Adrian Montilva allowed two runs on seven hits with five punch outs over 4.2 innings. Logan Snow was awarded the victory after tossing 4.1 scoreless innings of relief.
