St. Bonaventure, N.Y. – The Youngstown State softball team extended its winning streak to eight games after sweeping a doubleheader from St. Bonaventure, 16-5, 7-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Joyce Field.
The Penguins improve to 19-10 overall while the Bonnies fall to 2-17 on the year.
In the opener, the Penguins hammered out 19 hits, which ties for the third-most in a single game and the most in a game since 2018. Senior Conchetta Rinaldi went 4-for-5 with a double and four runs batted in while Sara Fessler and Lydia Wilkerson each had three hits.
Sophie Howell picked up her 12th win of the year tossing 3.2 innings of hitless and scoreless relief and striking out five.
The Bonnies jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one inning courtesy of Olivia Moon's three run home run.
The Penguins added a run in the second inning and four more in the fourth to take a 6-3 lead. Rinaldi's single up the middle in the second cut the deficit to 3-2, and Autumn Behlke's sacrifice fly knotted the game in the third. Macy Littler's infield single plated Kennedy Dean, and Rinaldi singled again to score Elyssa Imler and Littler scored on a throwing error.
St. Bonaventure plated two runs in the bottom half of the third to trim the YSU lead to 6-5.
The Penguins answered with a run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, and exploded for a seven-run frame in the top of the seventh. Dean's bases-clearing three-run double and Rinaldi's two-run double keyed the Penguins' seven-run seventh.
In the nightcap, the Penguins fell behind 2-0 after the Bonnies posted a pair of runs in the bottom of the second.
Jillian Jakse's run-scoring single in the third trimmed the lead to 2-1, and Hailey Niederkohr's two-run triple in the fourth put the Penguins up ahead, 3-2.
Fessler belted a two-run home run in the top of the seventh, and Sydney Payne and Reese Campbell-Schaller each scored on a wild pitch.
Youngstown State hosts Green Bay in a three-game series, March 29-30, at the YSU Softball Complex.
