Youngstown, Ohio – The Youngstown State softball team extended its win streak to 10 games after sweeping Horizon League foe Green Bay in a doubleheader, 6-5, 9-3, on Friday evening at the Covelli Sports Complex.
It marks just the third time in program history the Penguins have won at least 10 consecutive games, and the Penguins are just one win away from tying the program record of 11.
Youngstown State improves to 21-10 overall and 8-0 in the Horizon League while the Phoenix fall to 6-21 overall and 2-6 in the league.
In the opener, Conchetta Rinaldi went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in while Sara Fessler went 2-for-4 with a home run, her fourth of the season. Lydia Wilkerson also went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Senior Sophie Howell tied a career high with 11 strikeouts and earned her 13th win of the season with a complete-game performance.
In the nightcap, Fessler, Jillian Jakse and Hailey Niederkohr each cranked out two hits while sophomore Kennedy Dean clubbed a majestic three-run home run. Niederkohr also drove in a pair of runs with a two-run triple.
Senior Elyssa Imler went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Rinaldi drove in a pair of runs.
Devan Ryan earned her fourth win of the season with a complete-game outing and fanning eight batters.
Youngstown State and Green Bay will close out the series with a single game on Sunday, March 31. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
