St. Charles, Mo. - The Youngstown State lacrosse program fell to Lindenwood's second-half surge, 17-10, on Wednesday afternoon at Hunter Stadium.
The Penguins and Lions were tied 7-7 at halftime but Lindenwood outscored YSU 10-3 in the second half. Youngstown State falls to 0-9 on the season while the Lions improve to 9-1.
Ally Garrett matched a career-high with four goals, three of which came in the first half for a hat trick early on. Lena Cox also scored multiple goals, finding the back of the net twice.
Four Penguins found the back of the net once: Ava Kreutzer, Callie Vaudry, Brooke Peck, and Genna Cooke while four Penguins made assists with Cox, Kreutzer, Katie Grottenthaler, and Grace Rund delivering helping hands in the contest.
Paige Borkowski recorded impressive numbers at goal. She made 17 saves on the day, 11 of which came in the first half where she delivered a .611 save percentage. She gave up 17 goals in the game for an even save percentage, .500.
Kayla Stecker caused three turnovers while Dany Emler and Jocelyn Fike grabbed three ground balls. Grottenthaler collected two draw controls to lead the Guins.
Lindenwood's draw control effort limited the Penguins' possession. The Lions outdrew YSU 25-5 on the back of Ryleigh Cavanaugh's 17 draw controls. Logann Eldredge spearheaded Lindenwood's offensive effort with eight goals and five assists for 13 points.
The Penguins came out to an early 2-0 lead over the Lions when Garrett and Cooke found the back of the net early on. Cox assisted on Cooke's score at the 8:53 mark of the first quarter.
Lindenwood answered with two goals of their own before Peck became the third Penguin to score in the first period, making the score 3-2 with 3:10 to play in quarter one.
The Lions closed out the quarter with two goals before Kreutzer made things even at 4-4 on an assist from Rund early in the second quarter.
Lindenwood had a quick answer before Garrett scored her second of the day on an assist from Grottentahler to make the score 5-5 with 11:15 to play before halftime.
The Penguins would exchange goals all the way until the end of the first half with Vaudry and Garrett finding the back of the net to make the score 7-7 headed into the second half.
Lindenwood outscored YSU 6-2 in the third quarter to take a four-goal lead over the Penguins. Garrett scored her fourth goal of the day at the 8:43 mark and Cox got on the board for the first time with 48 seconds to play in the third.
YSU entered the final quarter of play with a 13-9 deficit that Lindenwood quickly made 15-9 on two Sara Grieco goals early in the fourth. Cox would score her second of the day and 20th of the season at the 8:30 mark of the final quarter. The Lions closed out the game with two goals of their own to make the final score 17-10.
The Penguins will return to Mid-American Conference play on Sunday as they travel to face Detroit Mercy. First draw is set for 1 p.m. at Titan Field in Detroit, Mich.
