Jonesboro, Ark. — The Youngstown State bowling team dropped its three matches at the Mid-Winter Invitational on Sunday and finished sixth in the 18-team field at Hijinx: The Funtivity Spot.
The Penguins were fourth after qualifying, and fell two spots in the final standings after going 0-3 in their three best-of-seven Baker matches on Sunday. It's the first time in seven tournaments this season that Youngstown State finished outside of the top four.
"We certainly had an up-and-down weekend," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "While we made some mistakes, we also feel like we were a few shots away from winning each match. There are plenty of positives to take away from the weekend and plenty of information we can use to be better moving forward."
The Penguins dropped their opening match 4-1 to Vanderbilt, with the Commodores taking the final game by seven pins. That removed YSU from contention for the tournament title, and the Penguins went on to lose 4-2 to Maryville. Youngstown State dropped the opening game 203-197, and game three went 182-180 to the Saints. In the final best-of-seven match, the Penguins held a 3-2 lead on the Nebraska, but the Huskers won a close game six and shot 259 in game seven.
YSU's Kirsten Moore was named the MVP of the tournament for her performance in traditional play on Saturday. The Penguins shot 5,370 for an average of 214.8 in traditional play, and they averaged 195.4 in the Baker format. YSU averaged 202.5 overall at the tournament, which was the fifth-best average in the field.
Youngstown State's next tournament will be the Music City Classic on March 15-17 in Smyrna, Tenn.
