Boiling Springs, N.C. – The Youngstown State softball team picked up a pair of wins on day two of the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldog Classic with victories over East Tennessee State, 7-2, and Gardner-Webb, 3-1, on Saturday.
The Penguins improve to 4-0 for the first time since 1996.
In the opener against the Buccaneers, the Lydia Wilkerson went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in while Ashlyn Bishop and Lauryn Swanson each went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and Swanson scored twice.
Senior Sophie Howell turned in another quality start striking out four and allowing just five hits in a complete-game victory.
The Penguins scored five times in the bottom of the third inning and twice more in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Against Gardner-Webb, freshman Autumn Behlke collected her first win in her college debut throwing a complete-game six-hitter with six strikeouts.
Sara Fessler went 2-for-3 with a double and Elyssa Imler went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
The Penguins got on the board in the top of the first inning on Jillian Jakse's sacrifice fly that plated Fessler for a 1-0 lead.
After the Bulldogs tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third, Hailey Niederkohr's ground out to second scored Imler with the go-ahead run in the top of the fifth. Niederkohr's run-scoring double in the in the top of the seventh plated Imler again.
The Penguins close out the tournament against Delaware, Sunday, Feb. 11. First pitch is set for 10 a.m.
