Boiling Springs, N.C. -- The Youngstown State softball team dropped a 9-5 decision to Delaware on day three of the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldog Classic on Sunday morning.
With the loss, the Penguins fall to 4-1 on the year.
Sophomore Ashlyn Bishop went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and a run scored.
Kennedy Dean, Sara Fessler and Jillian Jakse also posted doubles for the Penguins.
After the Blue Hens scored a run in the bottom of the first, the Penguins tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Dean doubled to lead off the frame and Elyssa Imler singled and reached second to put runners at second and third. Bishop doubled home Dean to tie the game and Hailey Niederkohr's ground out plated Imler with the go-ahead run.
Delaware used a six-run second inning and added another in the third to take an 8-2 advantage.
In the top of the fifth, Youngstown State added three runs to get cut the deficit to 8-5. Bishop singled and Niederkohr was hit by a pitch and both runners advanced on a wild pitch then scored on an error. Fessler scored on Jakse's double for the Penguins' third score of the inning.
Delaware added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Youngstown State returns to action, Feb. 16-18, at the Presbyterian Tournament in Clinton, S.C.
